Wellness and Health Promotion Certification Program
Cleveland Chiropractic College is pleased to announce the kickoff of its Wellness and Health Promotion Certification Program. This evidence-based program features a world-class faculty with expertise in all areas of health promotion, including nutrition, workplace wellness, athletics, lifelong health and much more. Students who complete the program will be awarded a certificate in Applied Health Promotion from
Cleveland College. Sessions can also be attended individually. Credits earned from the 100-hour certificate may apply toward the new
MS in Health Promotion currently in the design phase at the Cleveland.

Program Details:

Session 1- July 12-13, 2008
Dr. Will Evans and Dr. Cheryl Hawk
Introduction to Health Promotion
Dr. Evans, a chiropractor who also holds a Ph.D. in Health Promotion and is CHES certified, is Cleveland’s Director of Health Promotion Degree Programs. Dr. Hawk, a chiropractor, one of the nation’s foremost chiropractic researchers, is the college’s Vice President of Research and Scholarship. She is also CHES certified and holds a PhD in Preventive Medicine from the University of Iowa. These distinguished doctors are the creators of the program. In this opening session they will provide an overview of the program and an introduction to key definitions, terms and topics such as a wellness model for chiropractic practice, health behavioral theories, epidemiology for health care providers, health education principles and how to get paid for health promotion in practice.
Session 2 – August 9-10, 2008
Dr. Ron Rupert
Using the Evidence in Health Promotion
Dr. Rupert, Dean of Research at Parker College of Chiropractic, is the developer of the MANTIS database and a leading speaker in research and informatics in the chiropractic profession. He will delve into informatics and provide an introduction to health promotion research methods, as well as show attendees how to search the literature and so they may judge the evidence base in wellness and health promotion first-hand.
Session 3 – September 13-14, 2008
Dr. Jim Gerber
Nutrition, Diet and Health
Dr. Gerber, a well-known speaker in evidence-based nutrition, is a professor for both Western States College of Chiropractic and the University of Bridgeport’s MS in Nutrition program. He will examine nutritional epidemiology and, according to scientific evidence, what works in nutrition and diet.
Session 4 – October 18-19, 2008
Dr. Ron Kirk and Dr. Meridel Gatterman
Physical Activity and the Straighten Up America Program
Dr. Kirk, a professor at Life University, is the developer of the Straighten Up America, a program for enhancing spine strength and flexibility for everyone, from toddlers to senior citizens. Dr. Gatterman, who holds degrees in both health education and chiropractic, is an expert in the use of chiropractic and health promotion, and is an advocate of patient-centered preventive care. These doctors will share their expertise in the areas of general physical fitness, exercise safety issues for various age groups, exercise and the older adult and the benefits of the Straighten Up America program.
Session 5 – November 15-16, 2008
Dr. Steve Conway and Dr. Mike Perko
Worksite Health Promotion
Worksite health promotion is one of the fastest-growing areas of wellness in America today. Dr. Conway, an attorney and chiropractor, has consulted with some of the largest corporations in the U.S. and is regarded as an expert in getting chiropractors involved in working with industry. Dr. Perko is CHES certified, Chair of the Health Sciences Department at The University of Alabama and a featured speaker for WELCOA, America’s largest worksite wellness and health promotion consultant group. Topics will include worksite health promotion, implementation and evaluation, industrial consultation and methods for getting your foot in the door with corporations and small businesses.
Session 6 – January 10-11, 2009
Dr. Ron Williams and Dr. Lisa Killinger
Lifelong Health and Health Promotion in Athletics
Dr. Williams, a former NCAA athlete who holds a master’s and Ph.D. in Health Promotion, is CHES certified and a professor at Southeast Missouri State University. Dr. Killinger is a professor at Palmer College of Chiropractic and a longtime member of the American Public Health Association’s Chiropractic Health Care Section. These doctors will explore topics such as healthy kids, healthy aging, risk assessment of athletes, epidemiology of inactivity, health promotion in athletics and sports injury trends and prevention.
